Hi.

Welcome to Make 1,2 - a space for reviews about albums, songs and artists who are changing the way we think about society today.

The Gate by Björk

The Gate by Björk

It's hard to label Björk as anything less than a visionary. Her music, since the 1990s, has always challenged, confounded and resisted so many musical sensibilities of the era. She has always managed to provide sonic landscapes that are meandering, that suspend the listener somewhere else, in a place only she really knows. Her latest single "The Gate" sees her working once again with Arca, who was instrumental in making Vulnicura such a success, but taking a decidedly softer approach in her post-breakup life, where she seems to be exploring what desire and utopia look like through human connection.

The video itself shows off Björk's immense talent for creating new worlds and possibilities through aesthetics, anchored by a custom Gucci dress that took almost 900 hours (!!) to create. The song might be minimal in its production but the maximal aesthetic hints at what is sure to be a more sensual, lush album. I can't wait for the full release.

For the first release from her forthcoming new album, co-produced by Arca, Björk has teamed up with a super-troupe of contributors to create a hallucinogenic new video. Artist Andrew Thomas Huang lends his tech-savvy hand to envision a kaleidoscopic world inhabited by the singer-songwriter, who is clad in an iridescent otherworldly garment designed by Gucci's Alessandro Michele.
