Magic

Sometimes a playlist comes together by accident or coincidence. This is definitely one of those coincidental weeks, fueled by some suggestions from Spotify's Discover Weekly playlist and a bevy of new releases. Kicking off the playlist is Ibeyi's first Spanish-language track, a slick and intimate pop record that sets the tone for moves between genres and continents. Originally the playlist was centered around Björk's "the gate" but in time, I started to see the center of the playlist in Rayana Jay's "Magic." Though it's the most upbeat track on the playlist, it has an electricity that runs through every song in different ways. Once again, I find myself ending on a challenge to embodiment and desire in Moses Sumney's "Don't Bother Calling." This track, like the entirety of his new album, questions the fixation on being coupled and charts a streak of independence that is difficult to sustain in this hyperconnected world.
