Given that more and more artists are releasing singles without any guaranteed long-format project, it makes sense to keep track of all the tracks being released in a given month - whether it's one offers or the standout track from an LP or EP. Even though January 2018 has been relatively quiet album-wise, a lot of strong singles have been released, many of them surprises or artists who still haven't gotten the credit they deserve. Young Fathers, for instance, is an unclassifiable trio from Scotland hat blends rap, gospel, grime and pop stylings into politically aware earworms you can't easily forget. Apparel Wax is an anonymous electronic music collective that's turning the volume up on funk, soul and house music one again.

The top honor for January has been given to Tune-Yards. On the song "Honesty," she showcases her production chops with arrangement that fades in and out, as he sings over lines like, "Close your eyes / Get in touch / With the physical sensations coursing through your body." There is a frankness with this single that makes it memorable, even in the context of a strong album interrogating white femininity, guilt and inaction.
