12 out of the 15 songs on this week's playlist feature women, most of them exclusively. This was unintentional but ended up creating a worldwide kaleidoscope of feminist songs, from the glitchy opener by A l l i e to the energetic dance number guided by Nomi Ruiz to the Afro-Latino roots of Ibeyi and Danitsa. The initial title for this playlist was "Interia," meant to reflect a forward motion that happens without disruption or interference. But the other implication was that the motion itself was static and routine. There's hardly anything routine about what I present here. The playlist, largely compromised of newcomers, continually surprise and delight as they explore the themes of love, embodiment and self-reflexive through a variety of different musical stylings and thematic approaches.
