If you blink for just a second too long, you're going to miss out on important opportunities and experiences in life. For this week's playlist, I focus largely on emerging artists (with a few notable exceptions) who are taking advantages of their own experiences to make textured, evocative singles that deepen our understanding of what contemporary music can be. Ms Banks, for instance, delivers on the promise of female rappers from the UK, even though she hasn't yet dropped an EP or LP. On the R&B and electronic side of the spectrum, The 25th Hr, whose excellent debut last year was seriously underrated, produces a sticky summer jam about summer that brings a layered arrangement to more conventional lyrics. Or Nilüfer Yanya, who is holding the flag for a new vanguard of pop music that once again relies on vocal ability through a thoroughly modern sound.
(And who can resist a St. Vincent cover of Rihanna's "Consideration" featuring SZA? Not exactly the new guard like the rest of the playlist but the way she adds a rock sensibility through her guitar playing enhances the song's feminist spirit.)
