"You're just a broken little toy / a silly little boy" Young Fathers snarl in their muscular rap-gospel hybrid "Toy" to open up this week's playlist. It's a hook to playlist that seems to be willfully deconstruct that notion across genres, from the soaring electronic single "HEAVEN" from The Blaze (you must watch the accompanying video) that manages to break through any cloudy day to a remix of Cake da Killa's "Talkin' Greezy," a swagger-heavy rap track about the owning the club. There's also a clear nod to the past on this playlist: from Natalie Prass's 70s-inspired pop single "Short Court Style" that brings infectious bass lines and energetic lyrics or Against All Logic, an alias of Nicolas Jaar, that relies heavily on funk and soul to get back to the essence of what make house music so good.
Perhaps the most beguiling song of the playlist is the last by Jean Deaux, her quick lyrical delivery floating over and against a beat that seems wrapped in its own logic. It's hard to find all of the layers but you're so seriously hooked you want to listen to listen again.
