I never thought I'd utter the words, "Sade is back." But here we are, with a new Sade song for the Wrinkle in Time soundtrack, for a film directed by Ava DuVernay. It's a particularly magical return: a twinkling lullaby that is unmistakably Sade because every note and phrase is delivered with such tenderness. The rest of the week really featured numerous things getting recorganized or added at the last minute, due in part to surprise releases by Beach House, Vince Staples, Years & Years and serpentwithfeet. The sounds really are expansive this week: from Little Dragon's signature (and often underrated) Nordic electro-pop to Amadou & Mariam's playful African dance music to Peggy Gou's Asian-tinged house banger to Young Father's dense arrangements blending pop, gospel, rap and post punk influences. Everything together could seem like a bit of a mess but I think it captures how a sense of discord in 2018 can really reveal intersections of song and intention.
