Hi.

Welcome to Make 1,2 - a space for reviews about albums, songs and artists who are changing the way we think about society today.

Geyser

Geyser

The sonic burst that introduces Mitski's latest single from her forthcoming album is like, the name implies, a release of sound and an emotional release. For just a second or two of silence before, you are left in anticipation of what's next and then, suddenly, it arrives for you to experience. The rest of the song brings Mitski to the place where she is most skilled: navigating the perilous spaces of love seemingly torn apart or complicated to the point of emotional collapse. But she always manages, somehow and somewhere in the song, to find empowerment. Grief is never defeating for Mitski. She shows us how to sing through another sorrow.

Her song, as such, anchors this playlist even if it has relatively little in common with most of the tracks. It does, however, come in the middle of the playlist and manages to bridge the gap between a more upbeat and raucous first half of the playist and the more funky, deep-in-your-feelings second. Once I found that bridge, it seemed like everything fell into place and was finally ready to be listened to.
