The singles lull has finally broken, with some truly impressive new singles by Moses Sumney, Neneh Cherry and Robyn. Moses breaks free from the softness of his previous album to produce an impassioned protest piece that blisters with unresolved tension while Neneh Cherry teams up with Fourt Tet and Metronomy to use her soulful, measured voice over crackling bass and tinkling hi-hats. Then there is Robyn. Back after 8 years, Missing U is a sad dance song that breaks from the Body Talk mold to go deeper than she's ever gone before. The last 40 seconds are so utterly thrilling that it's been on near constant repeat. And these are just three of the standouts. Elsewhere Santigold pushes her upper register. Gaika blends trap hop and reggae to paint a clear picture of Black diaspora. All in all a great way to start the month of August.
