For this week’s playlist, I started out by anchoring it with two songs: Yumi Zouma’s delightfully funky, disco-inflected “Crush (It’s Late, Just Stay)” and Noname’s passionate ode to Black life and examination of Black death on “Prayer Song.” Though both tracks are on the opposite end of a sonic and lyrical perspective, they formed the poles of influence that defined the playlist. The trick with this was trying to find a structure that made sense. Initially some songs felt out of place, stunting the overall flow. At another point, there were too many upbeat tracks sandwiched at the end, which gave it quite a lopsided feeling. In the end, but really forming a series of subtle shifts in tones and tempos, I created a rich tapestry of what’s good in music right now.
